2017 Cubs and Explorers Summer Camp

As June pulled to a close, it was time for a few members of Ballymoney Scout Group to head north to attain their International Badge, as well as working towards their own unit Badges.

CUBS

Cubs were all geared up for the international trip.  Once we landed and got camp set up Supper was the order of the day, with Kaa on the pots and pans.  All sections and leaders had a pleasant evening in jammies and onesies before getting an early(ish) night for a busy day.
The next day, Horse riding, archery,Team building games were all undertaken with gusto.  Upon their return after the big trek the explorers, scouts and cubs all took part in a mud run.  Only word for it – Madness! One explorer undertook the challenge in his pajamas…. Mud baths and warm power-hosing then   an evening in the cafeteria building with Skip on drums and Akela and Rudi having a go at guitars made up for the lack of campfire (weather was not clement!)
Camp clean up and pack up and back into the bus for the trip home.  A fun trip for all…

SCOUTS

Dragged along by their parents, two scouts joined the group to provide help and also have a go at being explorers for the day, joining the Explorer Unit in a hard trek over the Urris Hills.

EXPLORERS

The Views were rewarding

Working on the Explorer Hikes Away Badge, the Unit took advantage of the lift going north and accompanied the Cubs on their Summer sojourn. Proving useful  to help with the set up and running of the camp 🙂 We also took advantage of Inishowens well developed trails network to explore the Urris Hills. An area well known to modern day adventurers. We had a fantastic experience, and with many more adventures to be had in the locality we’ll be sure to be back.

Ballymoney food bank

All scout sections have been collecting food to donate to the food bank during the month of June. Today we delivered it to the food bank to Julie, a volunteer for the food bank, who was kind enough to give up her time to receive the groups donation.  We hope that this raises awareness within the group that a food bank is such a vital part of every day life for some families in our local community.

Ballymoney Food bank visit

Scouts (and some beavers) enjoyed a visit on Friday night from Julie, a volunteer from Ballymoney food bank.  They took part in an interactive discussion about why there is a need for food banks in the community today. We learned that food banks need donations of food and also other items such as toiletries. We had a great start to donations by all who attended the meeting. Lets keep making positive impact on our local community for June.

Cubs at First Ballymoney

Tonight Cubs visited 1st Ballymoney Presbyterian Church as part of their Faith Badge. The Minister Gareth showed the cubs the stained glass, talked about the history of the church (Built in 1777!) ran a quiz and gave some valuable lessons and advice.  He fielded questions and provided answers when cubs went slightly askew with their logic…(Most special part of a church?Answer given – the giant Bean tin….)  The trip rounded off with a visit to the pulpit and the original chair (1647!)
Many thanks to Gareth, the church for having us and our Chair – Helen for putting us in touch.

Cubs (& a few beavers!) at the Ulster Aviation Society

Today Cubs and Three beavers took to the bus and went to the Ulster Aviation Society to finlalise their Air Activities badges.
Off we toddled in convoy and landed at the Hangars where we were met by the enthusiastic volunteers who were to be the guides.  In three groups we saw every part of the place, Cubs (And beavers) where in planes, working rudders, trying on helmets and generally having a ball.  We even got to see the work area were various projects were ongoing, including a replica spitfire which everyone got a go in (Akela wouldnt fit…)
A war time fire engine is also there and had its bell rung more than during the war…
A big thankyou to the volunteers there and to Matt for coming along too.  A trip to the Golden Arches of Ronald the clown provided lunch then home (only an hour late…)
The chairperson of the Society even awarded the kids their levl 3 badges.
Well worth a visit.  http://ulsteraviationsociety.org/

Cubs Xmas 16 Camp

This years Xmas camp was as always hosted by Shere Khan and ably assisted by both Junior Shere Khan minis, Robyn and Alex and the silent secret leader in the background (shhh it’s Mrs Khan)- Akela and Kaa tried to keep up!
Friday evening saw fun and games at the Joey Dunlop Treasure island frame, followed by tent building, hammock hanging and cinema construction – Big screen movies, snowflake building (not just any snowflake – Cubs 3D snowflakes!!) and bed..
Breakfast on saturday and into the Cubbywagon and off to Dundonald for clip and climb.  Everyone participated well and got up a wall and the stairway to heaven was topped by several – well done.
W5 was visited and not an exhibit left un-cubbed…. winter wonderland express train carried us on a winter ride and then off to climbit where cubs climbed and leaders coffee’d….
Burger King in Antrim (now theres a story…..) and off to the Antrim Castle gardens… lovely lit up and a reindeer hunt ensued….. Back to the hall and Bed….
NOPE! no bed for us!! time to build a couple of hundred boxes and make forts!  Castle Khan was built and the scouts amongst us slept in it…
Sunday arrives… no-one wakes early…. Breakfast, pass the pudding relays, Wafting and Flaffing competitions and of course… Craft time – where cubs sewed a stuffed Christmas tree decoration.
Good fun by all.
Well done everyone who took part.
“Leaders favourite parent appreciation award” was jointly won by Tyler and Ronins mums for refueling the leaders with caffeine….
cub-trophy
Thanks to JDLC staff, W5, Clip and climb staff (especially for the coffee) Mrs Khan for the materials and ideas and Mrs Akela for the Cubs Special Brownies….and Skip from Explorers for the spare hammocks..

Cubs October Camp! Breckenhill

This year we decided to sneak in an extra canvas camp for the cubs.  We headed off to Breckenhill Activity Centre in Doagh.
The cubs, most of whom are new this year and relative novices took to the camp lifestyle with absolute gusto.  We landed in the rain and Mr Dave and Miss Henry from Breckenhill had them feeling right at home and away doing activities from the get go.
Archery, Earth-ball, Trike relays, traversing walls, Splatmaster, Low ropes courses, Giant Catapults, orienteering, night-lines filled the day, and evening and the next day we had more archery as well as some team building inside games.
Campfires, smores, songs, snacks and meals made up the weekend.
A few of the cubs had never camped before and went straight at it and slept all night, the sixers were excellent at helping out and Wade, our new  Senior Sixer, showed exactly what a scout is all about.
Facilities where fantastic, cubs had a ball and even though the weather could have been better everyone of them wants to go back.  Even Dustbin Beaver our Young Leader / explorer cracked a smile.
Akela and Shere Khan even spent the night in Hammocks.  Many thanks to Skip from Explorers for throwing a couple of Hammockinn customs them up to us.
As always – many thanks to Shere Khan, Kaa and Cypress Beaver for their help at making it such a great camp. Kaa’s spag bol was welcomed on Saturday night and Mrs Akela’s brownies ended the camp in chocolately style.
Many thanks to Mr Dave and Miss Henry – we’ll see you at Easter!

Cubs at FoyleHov!

Coming to the end of the year Cubs took a trip to Foylehov to try out football Golf.  Interesting concept, sounds simple and so isnt!
Following two rounds we took a nature walk through Roe VAlley Country PArk where Shere Khan got everyone spotting leaves and tree types.  Packed Lunch and watching Nathan the Anti-scout trying to walk on water finished off the day.
Fun had by all, many thanks to Shere Khan for the resource packs and work put into the day.23AE7A01-82C8-4D8A-8BF3-61A82D86AA70 5C239A5F-9E37-46ED-A04A-D6CE135B9DAF 6AC1CBBD-D5AA-460C-8942-633AA551C562 732085C5-7158-4D49-B9E0-D7B80DF3BDDA 9k= IMG_0799 IMG_0802 IMG_0805 IMG_0809 IMG_0815 IMG_0818 IMG_0821 IMG_0823 IMG_0824

District Table Quiz Winners!!

For the second year in a row Ballymoney Cubs have become the The District Table quiz winners.
Held in The Peter Thompson HAll in Castlerock, several teams representing groups from the District competed for the district shield.  After a very close 8 rounds where everyone answered well Ballymoney B team emerged victorious and have now qualified for the County Heats.  Ballymoney A team performed very well as well.
Last year we progressed to become third in the Northern Ireland Final so here’s hoping 2016 is our year!
Well done to all who took part from all the groups and thanks to all the leaders who helped make the day.
The Cubs were presented with centenary woggles and the shield by ADC Noel.

Pancake Wednesday?

It was Pancakes galore at Cubs this week, with everyone making their own delicious bready based yum yums from scratch.

The measuring, mixing, cooking, flipping, decorating and tasting where undertaken with gusto,  The most popular topping? Not syrup, not even chocolate – But squeezy lemon. Hmmmm.

Thanks to Kevin and scouts for leaving out the gear for us.20160210_192826 20160210_194331 20160210_194338 20160210_194343 20160210_194526 20160210_192554 20160210_192609 20160210_192635 20160210_192822
