This year we decided to sneak in an extra canvas camp for the cubs. We headed off to Breckenhill Activity Centre in Doagh.
The cubs, most of whom are new this year and relative novices took to the camp lifestyle with absolute gusto. We landed in the rain and Mr Dave and Miss Henry from Breckenhill had them feeling right at home and away doing activities from the get go.
Archery, Earth-ball, Trike relays, traversing walls, Splatmaster, Low ropes courses, Giant Catapults, orienteering, night-lines filled the day, and evening and the next day we had more archery as well as some team building inside games.
Campfires, smores, songs, snacks and meals made up the weekend.
A few of the cubs had never camped before and went straight at it and slept all night, the sixers were excellent at helping out and Wade, our new Senior Sixer, showed exactly what a scout is all about.
Facilities where fantastic, cubs had a ball and even though the weather could have been better everyone of them wants to go back. Even Dustbin Beaver our Young Leader / explorer cracked a smile.
Akela and Shere Khan even spent the night in Hammocks. Many thanks to Skip from Explorers for throwing a couple of Hammockinn customs them up to us.
As always – many thanks to Shere Khan, Kaa and Cypress Beaver for their help at making it such a great camp. Kaa’s spag bol was welcomed on Saturday night and Mrs Akela’s brownies ended the camp in chocolately style.
Many thanks to Mr Dave and Miss Henry – we’ll see you at Easter!
Following on from the Successful District camp in 2012 the District Team held a great weekend camp for all sections at Dunluce High School. Fantastic programme of activities and Ballymoney had members from Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers there. Trains, water, inflatables, Nerf wars, demolition wars, a trip to the Giants Causeway and much more where the order of the weekend.
Happy Birthday Cubs! A cracker weekend in Dunluce high school for the County Cubs Centenary Camp. Akela, BAlloo and Shere Khan joined 15 other packs for an activity filled weekend. UK Commissioner Wayne Bulpitt also dropped in to pay a visist.
Shelter building, crafts, Pirates, camp-fires, stunts, fairs, trails, backwoods cooking, pioneering, gadgets etc. where all amongst the activities on offer.
Here’s to the next 100 Years!
Many Thanks to Jean and Her team for facilitating a great camp!

This year, for a bit of a change, we decided to do our Christmas Camp in the Hall and practising using our tents. On Friday Night we started of with a quick Rhythm exercise with Volunteer Dave then the fun began – Craft in the form of Good turns Jars – 12 Christmas Good turns with goodies for mums and dads were lovingly crafted in a hand-painted jar. Penguin Feeding frenzies, Night walk and hike with Volunteer Roma and then back to the hall for snacks, games and a midnight movie…. Saturday started early with Camp style cereal and then off in the bus to Clip & Climb in Dundonald – Everyone did really well and had a go at everything, we met Olaf and Elsa from Frozen, had balloon animals made and then headed to Indianaland where some more steam was blown off. The golden Arches got a touch for dinner then back for Pass the pudding, More games and movies, cookies and brownies and it was bed for night two. The sunday came with pass the parcel, prizes, pin the carrott on the snowman. A great weekend.
Many Thanks to Shere Khan and Robyn for planning and prep work, Baloo for his input, and Volunteers Roma and Saffie.
The cubs went to Woodhall Residential centre this weekend and undertook a wide range of activities working towards their challenge awards.
Outdoors they zoomed down ziplines, (Kaa was quickest of the Leaders…) skipped by numbers (much much harder than it sounds!) Did human Jenga on crates (congrats to Baggys team… ) High Ropes…. leading to the leap of faith – Akela had none and bailed at the top of the ladder….And Archery… Robin Hood has nothing on the Ballymunion Cubbies….. Shere Khan and Baggy both made the top and leaped but the tigers tail must’ve been scalded as he did it in record time!
Indoors was game show night, ‘Mang’ Edwards hosted Deal or No Deal where everyone one a prize.. and Blankety Blank was a hit as well… After supper off to dreamland the groups worked on their Ballymoney Cubs Got Talent piece for the morning.
Breakfast down and the talent show began! everyone did their best and thoroughly entertained the judges.
Many Thanks to Aubrey, Janet and John at Woodhall and Baggy, Mang, Shere Khan and Kaa of the Cubs Leadership team – special thanks to Mang for the work that went into the Game shows.
Well done Cubs…. lets get ready for the next one!
Last weekend the Scouts and Explorers packed up and headed off in the minibus for their winter weekend away at Dunluce Guide House. Once there, after setting up the hostel and unloading all the goodies brought by the Tesco delivery van, everything was set for a great weekend ahead.
On Saturday the Scouts headed off for various hikes around the North Coast. This allowed all participants to use and improve their map reading skills, as they each took turns to lead the group on the hike. Meanwhile the explorers went biking in the dunes. On returning to hostel, we welcomed two new scouts, four explorers and a leader, with their investiture ceremony taking place while abseiling the cliffs of Dunluce Castle. On Saturday evening everyone enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner cooked this year by the explorers. This was followed by party games, including the After Eight Challenge, and ‘IbbleDibble’. After a leisurely breakfast on Sunday morning the Scouts headed out to complete an incident hike, including stretcher rescue on the cliffs, blind travail and dismantling a bomb. The weekend came to a close on Sunday afternoon when it was time to pack up and return to the scout hall. We are all looking forward to our next adventure! We would like to thank Carolyn, Trevor and Sarah for the goodies, and Helen, Jeremy and Sarah who joined us for dinner on Saturday.
Shere Khans Christmas camp.. This year cubs joined up with beavers and started their Xmas camp with a trip to the millennium forum to watch jack and the beanstalk (oh no they didn’t..Lol) Once back at the guide house pass the pudding, wafting and flaffing in feeding frenzy, pass the pudding and card making were the order of the day. Mangs mighty spaghetti bolognese fueled the remainder of the games and following supper the Santa team (ably assisted by Explorer George) were ahead on points…(explorer Peters team were sooooo close) Then Santa visited and handed out goodies! the night finished off with a movie on the big screen.. Next day baggy provided the breakfast of all cub champions -waffles! More games, including the new favourite…. Table top air pingpong hockey…. Fun was had by all and Akela wants to pass his thanks on to the Cubs leadership team, Shere Khan, Kaa, Mang and the invaluable brains behind the games and silent leader… Mrs Shere Khan! Cubs all went home with Smartie tubes to collect 20ps over Christmas, good luck. PS… Santa team won reindeer candy canes and the snowmen team took an admirable silver place and got canes for their trees….
The County skills camp took place over the weekend, with Ballymoney joining scouts from all over County Londonderry.
The scouts took part in different activities from knife and axe, pioneering and backwoods cooking.
At the end of a tiring weekend they were all awarded their knife and axe with a certificate presented by the D.C. Paul Meikle.
Cubs finished for another year and celebrated with a one night camp at Baggy Mansion following a trip to the Swimming Pool. BBQ’s, Brownies, Bouncy castles, Water Bombs and relays were the order of the evening with smores and campfires. Cubs learnt how to put away their tents and pack their kits, handle and care for a python! good fun all round – See you all in september! Thanks to Baggy and Barry for hosting, Kyle for bringing his snake, Mang for helping out and Shere Khan for providing Akela with a castle to sleep in….
17 Cubs went to the guide house this weekend for the last outing of the year. Shere Khan (ably assisted by Mrs Shere Khans artistic endeavours!) had a full itinerary. Hathi rejoined us for the experience and Baggy made her signature waffle dish – you’ll notice the cubs with their self-designed international sign language ‘WE WANT WAFFLE’ sign in one of the pics.
Cubs cleaned up the beach,’flaffed & wafted’ fish in a Polar Frenzy, had magic carpet rides, passed the pudding, made finger puppets, did a night trek, built towers from spaghetti and marshmallows, designed a cubs christmas bayeux tapestry, watched movies and even squeezed in some sleep!
All in all a great time was had.
Many thanks to the parents who helped out with the programme.
The Wild West Theme started on Tuesday with both Beaver Colonies visiting Shean’s Horse Farm where they enjoyed a beautiful horse trek in the sun. Our Wild West Summer Camp began on Friday evening again back a Shean’s Horse Farm. The Beavers played games, had a beef burger supper, unpacked, wore their camp blankets whilst singing around the campfire, completed a midnight trail and went to sleep in their tent. On Saturday morning we watched the horses and ponies being rounded up, had breakfast and then trekked up the mountain where they all had a chance to cut some peat, and finally ate some hotdogs before heading home.

As the light evenings start to disappear and everyone returns to school and work, Ballymoney Scouts and Explorers look back on a summer camp of fun and challenging activities and, yes, it rained!
Summer camp was held at the end of July in Newcastle Co. Down, and as usual we were joined by Mytholmroyd Scouts and Explorers for what promised to be a week of challenges, fun and water! Arriving on the Saturday we got the tents up quickly in the sunshine but by the evening not only had the Scouts arrived in Newcastle but so had the rain! This didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm though and camp was quickly in full swing with the scout patrols organising their tents and getting wood for their fires.
During the week all the normal summer camp activities took place – learning to use axes and saws to chop wood for fires and learning to cook on the fires (even roasting a joint of meat in an old tin box). In addition the scouts went swimming (in the river and the pool), had a day trip to the Folk and Transport Museum, walked to the top of Slieve Donard and went “wet bouldering”. This last activity was enjoyed by all and involved getting kitted out in wet suits, helmets and buoyancy aids and then “walking” up the river from Bloody Bridge. The addition of natural rock slides, waterfalls and jumping off the rocks into plunge pools made this a great day out, and all without too many bruises!
The Explorers took on the extra challenge of completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze/Chief Scout Platinum expedition. They did this at the beginning of the week in probably some of the wettest days of the summer! However, the weather didn’t deter them, nor did the midgies! They completed the challenge of the expedition, being exactly on time at the final pick-up point on the second day. The Explorers also made the most of the better weather later in the week with an afternoon and BBQ at Tyrella beach followed by really big ice-creams!
Friday evening saw all Scouts, Explorers and Leaders enjoying Patrol Choice –the patrol planning the menu for the meal and the youngest member of each patrol being sent shopping for the food. Then it was time to get some of the tents down for leaving early the next day. The final Saturday it was all hands on deck to get the Mytholmroyd tents down and packed into the wagon for 9am.
Scouts Own gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on the week; what they had learned, the new experiences they had, and the new friends they had made. Ballymoney tents and kit were all packed up by 12 noon, and it was off to the chip shop for lunch before heading home – tired, dirty, but with happy memories and looking forward to Summer Camp 2013!
Bad weather and flooding didn’t stop Ballymoney Scout Group from having an amazing time at the Coleraine District Jubilee Camp on the 22nd – 24th June. A last minute change of venue to Castlerock, where Hezlett Primary School and The Peter Thompson Hall came to the rescue, allowed almost 300 young people and adults to celebrate in style. Saturday saw a slightly brighter day which allowed all the activities to go ahead.
Explorers were tasked with making their way to Coleraine (having been dropped off at random points in the area). Along the way they had a list of tasks to complete, including cooking food with a stranger and finding a rubber duck.
The Scouts enjoyed a number of activities including archery, climbing, demolition assault course, laser tag as well as a short hike. The Cubs enjoyed miniature raft building, climbing, a nature ramble, and an obstacle course. Shani Steenson a mother of one of the cubs and a helper over the weekend said “it is great to see everyone mixing together and enjoying themselves even the adults had a go at the activities”.
The Beavers arrived Saturday lunch time and spent the afternoon enjoying beach games, before joining the Scouts and Cubs for a fair and then a campfire sing song. After a night to recover more games and crafts were enjoyed by all on Sunday morning before a Scouts Own led by the young people and attended by the Lord Lieutenant of County Londonderry.
The whole weekend was a great success and enjoyed by all. The young people are already looking forward to the next Coleraine District events for their sections when they will meet up with all their new friends again.
On Saturday 19th May 2012 Chief Scout Bear Grylls took to the air to meet almost 4,000 Scouts from Northern Ireland at a series of events in Clandeboye, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and Crawfordsburn Scout Centre.
Ballymoney Scouts took part in an overnight survival camp at the Clandeboye estate, where they slept out in basic shelters that they made themselves and ate under the stars.
In the morning they took part in various survival skills including making and using a bow drill to light the cooking fire, filtering water through a sock and making camp firelighters.
When Bear arrived the scouts got the chance to meet with him and show off the skills they had learnt.
The event was one of a number that Bear visited in Northern Ireland and Scotland at the weekend.
The tour is part of his mission to encourage more adults to volunteer for Scouting, as well as celebrate the important role of Scouting in Northern Ireland and the UK as a whole. The journey comes as part of his plan to visit the whole of the UK during his term as Chief Scout, having previously visited many parts of England.
The weekend’s events showed what Scouting is all about, offering thousands of young people the opportunity to take part in adventure in the company of peers and trusted adults. The Scout Association is the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country. Recent figures have shown that membership has passed the 525,000 mark in the UK, with almost 10,000 members in Northern Ireland.
However, the Movement is in desperate need of more adult volunteers to ensure that more young people can join the adventure.
Bear Grylls, Chief Scout, says: “It was great to visit Scouts in Northern Ireland. At every event I go to, I know I’ll meet young people taking part in the adventure that Scouting provides. It’s crucial though that more adults sign up as volunteers, to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to join.”
If you are interesting in volunteering with Ballymoney Scouts please contact the Kevin, Group Scout Leader, on 0777 563 2415
More About Scouting:
- The Scout Association was founded on 1st August 1907.
- Adventure is at the core of Scouting, and the Association passionately believes in helping their members fulfil their full physical, intellectual social and spiritual potentials by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves.
- Over 200 activities are offered by Scouting around the UK, made possible by the efforts of more than 94,000 volunteer leaders. This has helped make Scouting the largest co-educational youth Movement in the country.
- One of the challenges that the Scout Movement faces is finding more volunteers to plug the current gap.
- Adults working in Scouting contribute in excess of 364 million hours of voluntary work each year to their local communities.
- The number of volunteers working for Scouting is bigger than the combined workforces of the BBC (24,000) and McDonalds (67,000) put together.
- Worldwide Scouting has 28 million members both male and female and operates in nearly every country in the world.
On Friday 25th November the Scouts and Explorers packed up and headed off in the minibus for their winter weekend away at Dunluce Guide House. Once there, after setting up the hostel and unloading all the goodies brought by the Tesco delivery van, everything was set for a great weekend ahead.
On Saturday many of the Scouts and Explorers hiked around a portion of the North Coast. This allowed all participants to use and improve their map reading skills, as they each took turns to lead the group on the hike. Some of the Explorers took the opportunity to do some challenging biking, led by Robin Taggart.
After Eight Challenge, and ‘IbbleDibble’
After a leisurely breakfast on Sunday morning the Scouts headed out to complete a number of different challenges, including first aid, building a fire off the ground and tower building out of newspaper.
The weekend came to a close on Sunday afternoon when it was time to pack up and return to the scout hall. Looking forward to our next adventure!.
